Bus: The Via-azul is a government owned bus service specifically for tourists and caters to short and long distance travel throughout Cuba. They are the largest transportation network in the country.

Rental Cars: If you wish to go beyond the typical tourist destinations a rental car is the perfect option. Most tourist hotels have a car rental bureau on site. Highways are usually in good condition but side roads are typically in disrepair. There is not a lot of traffic in Cuba as most locals cannot afford personal vehicles, but make sure you keep your eyes out for horse-drawn carriages, bikes and pedestrians. To drive in Cuba you must be 18 years old with a valid driver’s license or have an International Drivers License (IDL).

Taxi: If traveling with a large group this can be more economical than taking the bus. There are plenty of taxis around but only ride in licensed taxis as private taxis are legally not allowed to transport foreigners. Flat rates are more used than the meter so make sure you negotiate your fare before you leave.
