Overview

Varadero is one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean, and for good reason, as its powder sand beaches stretch more than 20kms along the coastline. This has earned it the alternate title Playa Azul, which means “blue beach” in Spanish. In addition to its most valued resource, the beach, Varadero has natural attractions such as caves and chain  virgin cays. Varadero’s free port also possesses facilities for scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, yachting and other water sports.

Note: Many of the resorts do not run at full capacity during the rainy season and some of the restaurants may be closed and entertainment may not always be available, as it’s the time when resorts perform maintenance.

Getting There & Getting Around

The Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport is Varadero’s airport and is situation 10kms west of the peninsula and serves international and domestic flights.

Bus: The hop-on-hop-off tourist bus costs only 5 CUC/person for an all day pass. This bus system drives from one hotel to the next and eventually goes to the Plaza Americas from 9:30am to 9pm.

Taxi: Tourist taxis start the meter at 1 CUC and charge 1 CUC/km. Taxis are available from the airport, hotels and can be waved down in the city. Taxis with yellow license plates are not allowed to transport tourists and can face a fine if caught with foreigners.
