Bellamar Caves

Cuba is a popular tourist destination with loads of all inclusive resorts to choose from. Resorts have tons of activities and everything you need for your stay but it’s never really a vacation unless you do some exploring. One of my favourite things to do when I get sick of the hotel is to explore natural landmarks. Being one of the most popular areas in Cuba, Varadero may seem like just a collection of luxury resorts, but the Bellamar Caves are a great attraction to go see for spelunking adventure.

These caves are more than 2 kilometers deep and are an affordable and fun way to spend an afternoon. Hidden away from the Caribbean sun these caves hold a magical world hidden from sight. These caves are believed to have been formed over 300,000 years ago. They contain a number of pictographs drawn by the indigenous residents of long ago.

Since its discovery back in 1861, when a slave lost his tools in a mysterious hole in the ground this cave has become one of the most-visited natural attractions in Cuba. Tours can be arranged by hotels but if you hire a driver the entrance fee is only 5 CUCs (plus another 5 CUCs if you plan on taking pictures) so it’s a great way to see some of Cuba for a reasonable price.
