Belem, the jewel of Lisbon, is not only known for its history, the Torre de Belem or the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. It is a city near Lisbon, Portugal that offers so much more than history as far as the eye can see. If you have ever been to Belem, you will be immersed in a delectable treat that is not only appealing to the eye, but its sweetness will have you at hello.

This lovely little treat were talking about can be found at Pasteis de Belem. The decadent shop has created this impeccably warm custard tart with a light crunchy taste. As the recipe has been a secret for centuries, you’ll have to take the journey to Portugal to taste this treat. The tart is like no other pastry you have tasted, as its slightly burnt crust, flaky edges and cinnamon sprinkling adds to the sweet, succulent flavours the pastry boasts.

Since 1837, Pasteis de Belem has been in mastering the art of creating the perfect pastry. The place is always packed with locals who are engrossed in reading the daily news and of tourists who just can’t wait to get their hands on this unique treat. Of course, you may have to wait a little while before you can enjoy your treat, but trust me when I say it’s worth the wait. There is nothing else like it in the world, and so, if you’re planning a vacation to Portugal you are certainly going to want to make Belem one of your pit stops.
